Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about planning a private Sri Lanka journey with SelFly.
About Your Experience
5 questionsSelFly is not a fixed group tour. You start with a professionally planned Sri Lanka journey and make it your own, choosing the places, experiences, and pace that suit you.
SelFly gives you a starting point, not a fixed itinerary. You can customise a journey, ask our team to plan one for you, book a Day Experience, or hire a private vehicle and driver for your own plan.
You can book a custom multi-day journey, a private Day Experience, a personalised itinerary through our Plan It For Me service, or a private vehicle and driver through Transport Only.
Choose a journey or explore destinations, then add, remove, or adjust stops based on your interests, time, and budget. We help make sure the route is realistic and works well in practice.
Yes, small changes are usually easy. You can adjust timings, change a lunch stop, or skip a planned stop by speaking with your driver.
Larger changes, such as adding a new destination, extending the trip, or making a significant detour, need to be agreed with our team and may affect the price or route.
Destinations & Planning
6 questionsYes. SelFly provides destination details, including highlights, things to do, travel times, and practical tips to help you choose with confidence.
Yes. You can combine destinations across Sri Lanka into one private journey, depending on your available time and preferred pace.
Yes. Tell us your travel dates, interests, group size, and preferences. We can suggest a realistic route and suitable experiences for you to review.
Sri Lanka is a year-round destination, but the weather varies by region. The south and west coasts are generally best from December to April, while the east coast is generally best from May to September.
It depends on what you want to see. Shorter trips can focus on one region, while longer journeys allow a more relaxed route across cultural sites, hill country, wildlife areas, and the coast.
You can refine your journey before travel. Once confirmed, we prepare the practical route, vehicle, and booking details for your arrival. Your itinerary can be edited until it is finalised before your trip.
Transport & Travel
10 questionsYes. Every SelFly journey is private. You travel only with your own group in a private vehicle and do not share your schedule or vehicle with other travellers.
Yes. You can choose from available Mini Cars, Sedan Cars, SUVs, and Vans, depending on your group size, luggage, and travel requirements.
Yes. Transport Only is available if you already have your own itinerary and simply need a private vehicle and English-speaking driver. Transport Only bookings have a minimum duration of three days.
Yes. Our drivers speak English and can help with practical travel support, local recommendations, and day-to-day arrangements during your journey.
Your driver can share informal local knowledge and recommendations, but SelFly drivers are not licensed tour guides. A professional guide is not included unless separately arranged.
Multi-day journeys include a mileage allowance based on the length of your booking. This allowance is pooled across the whole trip, so you can use it flexibly across different days.
If your planned route exceeds the included distance, the applicable additional cost is explained clearly.
A per-kilometre charge may apply if your route exceeds the included mileage allowance or involves significant detours outside the agreed itinerary. We will explain this before confirming any major route change where possible.
All SelFly journeys are fully private. You travel with your own group, private vehicle, and dedicated driver.
We plan journeys at a realistic pace. Travel times can change because of traffic, weather, road conditions, or stops along the way, so we avoid building rushed or unrealistic days.
Driver hours are generally planned between morning and evening. Late-night travel or unusual timings should be agreed in advance so we can confirm what is practical.
Booking Process & Payment
10 questionsSubmit your request through the SelFly website or contact us directly. We will prepare your route, vehicle option, and price for you to review. Once you confirm, we send your booking details and travel instructions.
For Plan It For Me requests, we aim to send a tailored itinerary, route, vehicle option, and price within 24 hours.
No. SelFly does not currently take deposits or online payments.
For multi-day journeys and Transport Only bookings, payment is made on arrival in cash or by bank transfer.
Day Experiences are priced differently from multi-day journeys. The final total is based on the actual round-trip distance travelled, using the applicable vehicle rate. The website price is an estimate for the standard route, and the final amount is confirmed after the experience.
Your multi-day journey price includes:
- A private air-conditioned vehicle
- An English-speaking driver
- Fuel
- Parking and road tolls
- Driver accommodation
- Bottled water on board
- Route and itinerary planning
Check your confirmed journey details for the exact inclusions for your booking.
Unless clearly stated otherwise, the following are paid separately by you:
- Hotel accommodation
- Attraction entrance tickets
- Activities and experiences
- Food and drinks
- Personal expenses and shopping
- Separately hired professional guides
- Costs caused by major extra stops, long detours, or extended travel
The price is for the whole private vehicle, not per person. You choose the vehicle that suits your group.
Prices shown in your selected currency may update with exchange rates. The price confirmed in your itinerary is the agreed price for your trip.
Cancellation is free because nothing is charged in advance. Please let us know as early as possible so we can release the vehicle and driver for other travellers.
Day Experiences
4 questionsA Day Experience is a private one-day journey for travellers who are already in Sri Lanka. Each experience has a suggested route, and you can personalise it to suit your interests and timing.

Day Experiences include pickup and drop-off within the stated starting area for that experience. Check the individual experience page or ask us if you are unsure whether your hotel is covered.
Day Experiences are charged by the actual round-trip distance travelled, rather than a fixed daily rate. Your driver records the journey distance from pickup to drop-off, and the final amount is based on that distance.

4 questionsYes. SelFly does not lock you into selected hotels. You are free to choose accommodation that suits your location, style, and budget.
No. Hotel reservations and payments are made directly by you with the accommodation provider you choose.
No. Attraction entrance tickets and activity fees are usually paid directly by you. This gives you the freedom to choose which sites and experiences you would like to include.

Yes. We strongly recommend arranging comprehensive travel and medical insurance before you arrive.
SelFly does not provide travel, medical, evacuation, or personal-accident insurance. You should not assume that a vehicle provides tourist or passenger cover beyond the minimum required by law.
Travel Documents & Entry
3 questionsVisa and ETA requirements depend on your nationality and travel circumstances. Check the official Sri Lanka immigration or ETA website for the latest requirements before travelling.
Health and vaccination requirements can depend on your country of departure and personal circumstances. Check the latest guidance from your government or a qualified travel-health professional before travelling.
You are responsible for holding a valid passport, visa or ETA where required, travel insurance, and any documents needed for your personal travel arrangements.
Money & Payments in Sri Lanka
2 questionsSri Lankan Rupees are used for most everyday payments. Cards are widely accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, supermarkets, and many tourist businesses, but carrying some cash is useful for smaller shops, local restaurants, and rural areas.
You can exchange foreign currency at the airport, licensed exchange counters, and banks. International cards can also be used at many ATMs.
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. In restaurants, a tip may be given if service is not already included. Drivers and service staff are usually tipped based on your experience and satisfaction.
Connectivity
2 questionsYes. Tourist SIM cards are available at the airport and in towns from providers such as Dialog and Mobitel. They are generally affordable and offer coverage across most tourist areas.
Wi-Fi is common at hotels, cafés, and restaurants in tourist areas. Speeds are usually better in cities and main towns, while rural and hill-country areas may have slower or more limited connections.
Food & Dietary Needs
1 questionSri Lanka has many vegetarian, vegan, halal, and other dietary options. Tell us about your requirements before travelling and we can help suggest suitable stops and restaurants.
Packing & Essentials
2 questionsBring light, breathable clothing, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
For temples and religious sites, wear modest clothing that covers your shoulders and knees. A light scarf or wrap can be useful to carry with you.
Sri Lanka uses 230V electricity at 50Hz. Plug types can vary, so a universal travel adapter is recommended. Many hotels can also provide an adapter on request.
