Once a small fishing village, Arugam Bay rose to international fame in the surfing community in the 1970s. Despite the 2004 tsunami damage, the community rebuilt and the town has become Sri Lanka's premier surf destination.

Hot, dry east-coast climate during the surf season. The southwest monsoon's offshore winds make the surf clean and consistent, peak May to September, with shoulder waves in April and October.
