About Colombo
Sri Lanka's bustling commercial capital blends colonial architecture with modern skyscrapers. From the iconic Galle Face Green to vibrant Pettah markets, Colombo offers a dynamic urban experience with world-class dining and shopping.
History & context
Colombo has been a major port for over 1,500 years, visited by Arab, Persian, and Chinese traders along the Indian Ocean spice routes. The Portuguese established the first European fort here in 1517, followed by the Dutch in 1656 and the British in 1796, each leaving distinctive architecture that survives today. Colombo was made the capital of the British Crown colony of Ceylon in 1802 (the entire island came under British rule with the Kandyan Convention of 1815) and remains Sri Lanka's commercial heart and largest city.
