Should I buy a SIM in Sri Lanka?

You don't have to.

If your current mobile provider offers reasonable roaming in Sri Lanka, you can continue using your normal SIM.

Otherwise, a local SIM or eSIM is usually a practical option, especially if you'll be travelling around the country and using mobile data regularly.

Where can I get a SIM?

You can buy a local SIM from official mobile operator outlets, including options available at Bandaranaike International Airport after arrival.

The main operators you'll come across include Dialog, Mobitel (SLT-Mobitel) and Hutch.

You can also find their outlets in towns and cities around Sri Lanka.

When buying a local SIM, use an official operator outlet or authorised seller rather than an unknown third party seller.

Do I need my passport?

Yes. Tourist SIM cards need to be registered using your identification details, and your passport is used for this process.

The operator will handle the registration when you purchase the SIM.

Physical SIM or eSIM?

Both are options.

A physical SIM is simple if your phone doesn't support eSIM or you prefer changing the SIM yourself.

An eSIM is convenient if your phone supports it because you can keep your physical SIM in the phone and use the Sri Lankan connection separately.

Which network should I use?

If you're regularly watching videos, uploading content or working online, you'll naturally need more.

Rather than choosing a package based only on its size, consider how you normally use mobile data.

What should I do before leaving the airport?

If you buy a SIM or eSIM after arriving, test the connection before leaving.
