About Kandy
The last capital of the ancient kings' era, Kandy is a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled among misty hills. Home to the Temple of the Tooth Relic and the beautiful Kandy Lake, it's the cultural heart of Sri Lanka.
History & context
Founded as a royal capital in the late 15th century by King Sena Sammatha Wickramabahu, Kandy served as the last independent kingdom of Sri Lanka until it fell to the British in 1815, a remarkable 300-year resistance to European powers. The city is most famous for the Sri Dalada Maligawa (Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic), which houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha and was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988 as part of the Sacred City of Kandy.
