History & context
Developed by the British in the 19th century as a retreat from the lowland heat, Nuwara Eliya retains much of its colonial charm. The town is the center of Sri Lanka's tea industry, surrounded by estates that produce some of the world's finest Ceylon tea.

- Bring warm clothing, the drive from Nuwara Eliya to Horton Plains starts at 05:00 AM and temperatures at the park can be 4 to 8°C, especially between 06:00 to 08:00 AM
- Weather changes quickly in the mountains; clear views at World's End can disappear within minutes due to mist and rain
- Stay on marked trails at Horton Plains, the cliffs at World's End have steep drops and limited safety barriers
- Walking outside the designated trails is strictly prohibited inside Horton Plains. Rangers and police can issue heavy fines for leaving the marked paths
- Reusable water bottles are allowed inside Horton Plains and highly recommended. Avoid littering and take all waste back with you
- Wear comfortable walking shoes with good grip, especially during rainy months when trails become muddy and slippery
- Leeches can appear on some forest and grassland trails during wetter months, especially from June to December, long socks and leech socks can help
- Leave Nuwara Eliya at 05:00 AM, it is a 31 km, one-hour drive to the park entrance. Starting the trek by 06:15 AM gives you the best chance of clear views at World's End before the morning mist arrives. The full loop takes around 3 hours 45 minutes, finishing around 10:00 AM, with a return to town by 11:00 AM
