History & context
Sigiriya was built by King Kashyapa I between 477-495 CE as a fortified royal palace atop a ~180-metre rock (349 m above sea level), the famous Mirror Wall, water gardens, and frescoes (the 'Sigiriya Damsels') survive from that era. Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. Dambulla's cave temples date to the 1st century BCE when King Valagamba sought refuge here, with five caves containing 153 Buddha statues and ceiling paintings spanning 2,100 m², listed as a UNESCO site in 1991.
