Sinharaja and Kitulgala: rainforest trekking and white-water rafting
Sri Lanka's last significant stretch of lowland rainforest, Sinharaja, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the best place on the island for a guided rainforest walk with a real chance of spotting endemic birds. Kitulgala, closer to the hill country side, built its reputation on the Kelani River's white-water rafting and sits well as a stop between Colombo and Ella rather than a standalone base.
