About Sinharaja Forest Reserve
Sinharaja Rainforest is the largest remaining tropical rainforest in Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for its exceptional biodiversity and dense jungle ecosystem. Visitors explore the forest through guided trekking routes along natural trails, streams, and waterfalls. Sinharaja is world-famous among birders for its endemic species and mixed-species feeding flocks, including the Sri Lanka blue magpie, red-faced malkoha, green-billed coucal, and Sri Lanka spurfowl. Typical trekking durations offered by tour operators: • Short rainforest walk: about 2 to 3 hours • Standard rainforest trek: about 3 to 4 hours • Extended rainforest trek: about 5 to 6 hours • Deep forest adventure trek: about 7 to 9 hours For most tourists, the 3 to 4 hour guided rainforest trek is the most popular option, offering a good balance between wildlife spotting and exploring the rainforest without going too deep into the jungle.
History & context
Sinharaja was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1978 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988, Sri Lanka's last viable area of primary tropical rainforest, covering approximately 11,187 hectares across the Sabaragamuwa and Southern provinces. More than 60% of the trees are endemic and many are considered rare. The forest hosts roughly 20 of Sri Lanka's ~26 endemic bird species and about 50% of the country's endemic mammals, butterflies, reptiles, and amphibians, making it one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in South Asia.
Climate & best time
Hot, humid lowland rainforest climate with year-round rainfall. Mean annual temperature is around 27°C with high humidity. Driest months are typically January-March and August-September; the rest of the year sees heavy rain that makes trails muddy and brings leeches to the trails.
Easier trekking and better visibility for birds and wildlife.
Leeches are more active and trails can be slippery, but the rainforest is at its most vibrant.
