About Haputale
Perched on the southern edge of the hill country, Haputale offers dramatic views over the plains below. The area is steeped in tea history, prominently featuring Lipton's Seat.
History & context
Haputale developed around the railway line built by the British in the 1890s to transport tea down to Colombo. The area's identity is shaped by Sir Thomas Lipton, who built his Dambatenne Tea Factory here in 1890, still producing tea today and open for tours. His famous lookout point above the estate, where he is said to have watched the sun set over his plantations, is now known as Lipton's Seat. The town sits at about 1,431 m elevation on a ridge of the Uva highlands.
