About Tangalle
Tangalle is an expansive coastal town known for its long stretches of golden sandy beaches, tranquil bays, and deep blue waters. It offers a more secluded and peaceful beach experience compared to the west coast.
History & context
Tangalle has been a quiet fishing port and Dutch colonial outpost since the 17th century, the Dutch Rest House built in 1774 still operates as the Tangalle Bay Hotel, making it one of the oldest continuously running guesthouses in Sri Lanka. The town's name comes from the Sinhala 'Tan Gal' meaning 'projecting rock'. Once a major cinnamon and salt trading post, Tangalle today is celebrated for its long unspoiled beaches and turtle-nesting sites at nearby Rekawa.
