History & context
Mirissa has transformed from a small fishing village into one of Sri Lanka's most popular beach destinations. Traditional outrigger fishing (oruwa) is still practised here at dawn. Mirissa became a whale-watching hotspot in the late 2000s after researchers confirmed that blue whales gather along this coast during the December to April migration, making it one of the most reliable shore-based blue whale watching spots in the world.
