About Hikkaduwa
Famous for its impressive coral sanctuary and excellent surf breaks, Hikkaduwa is a lively coastal town with a vibrant beachfront full of restaurants, bars, and dive centers. It sits about 20 km north of Galle on Sri Lanka's southwest coast.
History & context
Hikkaduwa rose to fame as a hippie and surf haunt in the 1960s and 1970s, and remains one of Sri Lanka's most established beach destinations. Its coral reef was declared the country's first Marine National Park in 2002. The town was severely damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami and rebuilt with international aid, memorials at nearby Peraliya commemorate the worst rail disaster in history when a passenger train was struck by the wave.

Tropical coastal climate with temperatures between 26°C and 31°C year-round. The southwest monsoon brings the main rains May to September; the best beach and snorkeling weather is November to April.
