About Bentota
A premier beach resort destination on the southwest coast, Bentota offers golden sandy beaches, water sports, and a serene river estuary. Perfect for honeymooners and families seeking luxury by the sea.
History & context
Bentota became Sri Lanka's first major resort destination in the 1960s and 1970s, when the legendary architect Geoffrey Bawa designed Bentota Beach Hotel (1969), a landmark of tropical modernism that drew international attention to the area. Bawa's own country estate, Lunuganga, sits just inland and is now a heritage hotel and garden open to visitors. The surrounding villages are known for traditional cinnamon cultivation, and the Madu Ganga estuary nearby remains one of Sri Lanka's most important mangrove ecosystems.
