About Kitulgala
A small town in the lowland wet zone of western Sri Lanka set amidst lush rainforest at around 200m elevation. It is the white-water rafting capital of the island and famous for being the filming location of "The Bridge on the River Kwai".
History & context
Kitulgala is best known to the wider world as the filming location of David Lean's Oscar-winning 1957 film 'The Bridge on the River Kwai'. The fake bridge built for the production was destroyed during filming, but a small museum and replica still stand by the river. The area is also home to Belilena Cave, one of South Asia's most important prehistoric sites, where human remains and stone tools dating back up to 30,000 years (attributed to 'Balangoda Man', an early Sri Lankan Homo sapiens) have been excavated.

Hot, humid lowland rainforest climate with frequent rain year-round and temperatures from 24-30°C. Driest stretches are January-February and August-September. The Kelani River can rise rapidly after heavy rain.
