History & context
Negombo was captured by the Dutch from the Portuguese in 1644 and became a major colonial port built around the cinnamon trade, the Dutch Canal system that still runs through town was dug to transport cinnamon to Colombo. The Portuguese had earlier converted much of the local fishing community to Catholicism in the 16th century, which is why Negombo today has more than 25 churches and is nicknamed 'Little Rome'. Its proximity to Bandaranaike International Airport (about 10 km) makes it the most common first or last stop on a Sri Lanka itinerary.

Warm and humid coastal climate year-round, with temperatures between 24°C and 31°C. The southwest monsoon brings the heaviest rains May-August. Best beach weather is December-April.
